Yes. Many people with type 2 diabetes are cared for by a primary care doctor, who checks A1C, blood pressure, cholesterol and kidney function, adjusts medicine and refers to an endocrinologist when needed.

Do I need a referral to see an endocrinologist?

It depends on your coverage. Medicare.gov says Original Medicare generally does not require a referral to see a specialist, but a Medicare Advantage plan may. Check your plan before you book.

Primary care or an endocrinologist?

Primary care fits most people with type 2 diabetes: regular A1C checks, medicine adjustments, blood pressure and cholesterol care, vaccines and screenings, all with one doctor who knows your history. Our endocrine care page explains what we manage in the office.
An endocrinologist may help if your A1C stays above goal despite treatment, if you need complex insulin dosing, or if your doctor questions which type of diabetes you have.
Community health centers offer a sliding fee discount based on income and family size, which can help if cost is a barrier.
Medicare Advantage senior centers suit people 65 and older on a plan they accept. Medicare Advantage may require you to use in-network doctors and get a referral to see a specialist.
